2010 Pinot Gris Wairarapa

Fruit from the Johner Estate trial plot and Pinot Gris vines in the Pinot Noir block, partially barrel-fermented to 12.8% alc. and 10.7 g/L rs, the wine aged 7 months in German oak. Youthful pale straw-yellow in colour, this has a full, weighty nose of ripe stonefruits and minerals, with some nutty reductive interest. Dry to taste, the flavours of flint, mineral, stonefruits and nuts are broadly expressed on the palate, and with rounded textures. Seasoned oak nuances apparent. The wine shows well-integrated componentry, but fades a little on the finish. Serve with antipasto and white meat dishes over 2-3+ years. 16.5-/20 Mar 2011.
